Splash of the Week
Happy Friday, dear friends,
“If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.”
I saw that quote again this week.
It’s catchy. It implies upward mobility.
But it also oversimplifies. Being the smartest in a room is not the problem. Staying in rooms where nothing challenges you is.
If you are constantly the one explaining, teaching, leading: your brain rehearses competence. That’s good. It builds fluency. But if you are never confused, never corrected, never slightly uncomfortable, the system stabilises. Stability is efficient, but it is not the same as growth.
The Stoics would say: ego prefers safety over development.
Existentialists would say: becoming requires movement.
Buddhism would say: attachment to “I am this” creates suffering.
Different language. Same structure. So the real question isn’t: “Am I the smartest here?”
It’s: “Is this room stretching me?”
Some rooms are for your contribution.
Some rooms are for starting calibration.
Some rooms are for your expansion.
Which room are you spending most of your week in: contribution, calibration, or expansion?
Is your current environment reinforcing who you were, or who you’re becoming?
See you upstream,
Clouds
